FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about creating a will online with Livewill.
What is Livewill?+
Livewill is a free online platform that helps you create a legally valid will across Canada. Our guided process takes about 20 minutes and requires no legal knowledge.
Is an online will legal in Canada?+
Yes. Canadian law generally requires a will to be in writing, signed by the testator (you), and witnessed by two people who are not beneficiaries. Livewill creates the document — you print, sign, and witness it to make it legally valid.
Is Livewill really free?+
Yes. Creating, editing, and downloading your will as a PDF is completely free with no limits. We offer optional paid plans for secure cloud storage, family delivery, reminders, and version history.
Who can be a witness?+
Any adult (18+) who is NOT a beneficiary in your will and NOT the spouse of a beneficiary. Common choices include neighbours, coworkers, or friends who are not mentioned in your will.
Do I need a lawyer?+
For most straightforward estates, no. Livewill is designed for simple to moderate wills. If you have complex assets (trusts, businesses, properties in multiple jurisdictions), we recommend consulting a licensed estate lawyer.
What happens if I die without a will?+
In Canada, dying without a will (intestate) means provincial succession laws determine how your assets are distributed. Your spouse and children receive set portions — it may not match your wishes. The court appoints an estate administrator, which costs more time and money.
Can I update my will after creating it?+
Absolutely. Life changes — new children, divorce, new assets — should trigger a will update. With Livewill, free users can create a new will anytime. Paid users get version history so you can track changes over time.
How does secure storage work?+
Paid plans include encrypted cloud storage (AES-256) for your will documents. Your will is stored securely and accessible only to you. You can also set up family delivery rules so designated contacts receive access when needed.
Can I share my will with my family?+
Yes. Paid plans include a secure sharing feature where you can grant view-only access to specific contacts (lawyer, executor, beneficiaries, guardians). You control who sees what, and can revoke access anytime.
Is my data safe?+
We use AES-256 encryption, the same standard used by banks. Your data is never sold, shared with third parties, or used for advertising. You can delete your account and all data at any time.
What is the print-and-sign requirement?+
Creating your will digitally on Livewill is step one. For it to be legally valid in Canada, you must print the document, sign it in the physical presence of two eligible witnesses, and have both witnesses sign. Digital-only signatures are not valid for wills in most Canadian provinces.
Are you my attorney?+
No. Livewill is not a law firm. None of our forms, messages, instructions, information, or product descriptions should be treated as legal advice, and purchasing or using Livewill does not create an attorney-client relationship. If you have substantive legal questions, you should consult a lawyer licensed in your province.
What provinces does Livewill support?+
Livewill supports wills across Canada. Requirements vary by province and territory, so we provide province-specific templates to ensure compliance.
How much does secure storage cost?+
Secure Yearly: CAD $48/year. Monthly: CAD $6.99/month. Lifetime: CAD $129 one-time payment. Creating and downloading your will is always free.
Can I name a guardian for my children?+
Yes. If you have minor children (under 18), naming a guardian is one of the most important parts of your will. Livewill guides you through this process and explains what to consider.
What is a Power of Attorney (POA)?+
A Power of Attorney is a legal document that lets you appoint someone you trust to make financial, legal, or personal care decisions on your behalf if you become unable to do so. Livewill helps you create both Financial and Personal Care POAs.
Do I need an Expat Will?+
If you own assets in more than one country — such as property, bank accounts, or investments — an Expat Will helps ensure those assets are handled according to your wishes and the laws of each jurisdiction. It works alongside your domestic will.
What is a Living Will vs a Last Will?+
A Last Will (testament) covers what happens to your assets after death. A Living Will (Advance Healthcare Directive) covers your medical care preferences while you are still alive but unable to communicate. Both are important documents.
What is GetFarewell?+
GetFarewell lets you plan your end-of-life arrangements in advance — memorial preferences, ceremony details, personal messages to loved ones, and practical instructions. It reduces the burden on your family during a difficult time.
What services does Livewill offer?+
Livewill offers five free document creation services: GetWill (Last Will & Testament), GetPOA (Power of Attorney), GetExpatWill (cross-border estate planning), GetLivingWill (Advance Healthcare Directive), GetFarewell, and GetDigitalVault (secure document storage) (end-of-life planning).
What is GetDigitalVault?+
GetDigitalVault is a secure online storage space for your important life and legal documents — wills, POA, insurance policies, property records, passwords, and emergency contacts. Everything encrypted and accessible to your designated people when needed.
